Mind the gap: DBA students, knowledge generation, transfer and impact

Increasingly higher education institutions are expected to demonstrate their contribution academia, society, and the economy. This is pertinent for business schools as a key purpose them provide that enhances management practice, with Doctorates in Business Administration (DBAs) being highest-level qualification offered pursuit of this goal. Yet there scant research captures impact DBAs beyond individual academia. paper focuses on important role generating transferring knowledge from academia practice creating wider society Based 36 semi-structured interviews DBA students alumni, our shows how able generate exchange between business, enabling wide range impacts be achieved. We show transfer outcome learning process which supervisors learn speak each other’s language, two-way communication. Facilitated by power associated credibility legitimacy practicing senior managers, can then transferred. Personal development form analytical skills increased confidence gained through results personal acts precursor other forms impact, such improved organisational performance broader societal benefits. Research generated thus well-placed offer opportunities contribute substantially research-practice conversation education.
